Review - A Dark Kiss of Rapture by Sylvia Day

A Dark Kiss of Rapture (Renegade Angels, #0.5)Title: A Dark Kiss of Rapture

Series: Renegade Angels
Pages: 72

Synopsis: Of all the Fallen, Raze's hungers are some of the darkest and most insatiable. His brazen seductions cost him his wings, leaving him soulless and immortal, the most dangerous of seducers. He has roamed the earth for eons, hunting the rogues of his kind and protecting the humans who provide him with blood and sex. He is content with his life and the transient pleasures that flow through it... until one night and one woman change everything.

Kimberly McAdams is smart, beautiful, and wealthy. She can have any man she wants, but the moment she sets eyes on the lethally stunning Raze she knows he's the man she needs. As one searingly erotic night burns into something deeper and far more vital than either of them expected, an adversary from Raze's past sees a chance for revenge. Twisted by hatred, she will take from Raze what was taken from her—the precious gift of love.
A Dark Kiss of Rapture (Renegade Angels, #0.5)
My Review: This short story ended in a big tease, Raze and Kim had an instant connection and neither wanted to be a one night stand like they have a lot.

Kin is still reeling from the murder of her housemate and Raze is a fallen who is being hunted by minions and other fallen.

The fallen are angels who have lost their wings so this is a paranormal romance about fallen angels who have turned into vampires.

Kim and Raze meet in a bar, Raze a vampire trying to find someone to spend the night with and a good blood drink and Kim on a night out with girlfriends.

The ending to the story of fallen angels makes me want to read the actual sirst book in the series to see if their love will last or if they are destined for a doomed relationship.

Synopsis: Caderyn is on a mission. To design a fairy tale garden for a little girl and put her company, Secret Gardens on the map! She does not have time for romance, and she does not believe in fairy tales.

An evil alliance are determined to destroy the Fae, and enslave humanity. The destiny of all is in the hands of a woman who has to let go of reality and trust in her heart.

Caderyn learns that fairy tales do come true, just not always the way you expect.

My Review: I really enjoyed this book, I think it was mainly because it was about fairies and magical creatures.

Cadryn (awesome name) has a job making miniature fairy gardens and to get the little items she needs and some ideas for her miniature garden she goes to a miniature fairy shop called fairy Mary.

While at fairy Mary’s shop Cadryn gets all the miniature items she needs as well as making a new friend in fairy Mary.

Once Cadryn gets home she sets out all the items she has bought and finds a small fairy ball that fairy Mary gave her as a present and she decides that it is perfect for the centre of her magical fairy garden, the only problem is since Cadryn got the items she starts to have strange but vivid dreams about the fairy King and Queen and a shadow that has kidnapped the King’s soul.

After a while Cadryn realises that the dreams are because of the miniature crystal ball which is full of blue smoke.

Cadryn realises that she must save the Fae King along with her friend Jazmin before it’s too late.

This was full of action, mystery, magic and folklore with a very driven main character as she is willing to rescue someone she has never met because she feels she has to.

Synopsis: Twelve-year-old Samantha Wolf, and her best friend Ally, are excited to spend part of their summer break in the mountains of Montana. But unknown to them, Hollow Inn is bathed in mystery and legend. After arriving, they soon discover that things are not going well for Sam's Aunt and Uncle, who own the Inn. There's vandalism, ghostly sightings, and rumors of lost treasures. Determined to help, Sam and Ally embark on a challenging journey to discover the truth.

My Review: I totally loved this book, I think this is going to be my series of 2016.

Sam and her best friend Ally go to stay with her Aunt and Uncle in Montana in their new Inn, the only thing is the Inn has no guests because of the Hollow Inn legend.

According to the legend of Shawn Hollow he had a son who Shawn believed killed his beloved wife (she died in child birth) so Shawn cut him out of the will and left everything to his other four sons.

Unfortunately Shawn Hollow realised that his sons were all after the gold that he had found while working in a mine before he lost his brother to a mine collapse.

The legend attached to Hollow Inn is that there is a piece of gold still hidden on the property. So Sam and Ally read the journal that Shawn kept and Sam finds a hidden poem and a hidden passage and they go exploring to find the gold.

Once the girls find the gold they try to take it to show Sam’s Aunt and Uncle but a guy who has been causing trouble around the Inn, scaring the visitor’s away demands that Sam gives him the gold but her Uncle manages to save the girls from the crazy guy.

Once the guy is captured and Sam and Ally are safe they show the gold and give it to the guy who works as the handyman but he gives it to the Inn owners (Sam’s Aunt and Uncle) so that they can renovate and expand the Inn.

Until Zoë's former boyfriend Marc shows up with Zoë diary.

At first Echo's not interested, doubting there's anything in there she doesn't already know. But when curiosity prevails, she starts reading, becoming so immersed in her sister's secret world, their lives begin to blur, forcing Echo to uncover the truth behind Zoë's life so that she can start to rebuild her own.

Prepare to laugh your heart out and cry your eyes out in this highly addictive tale as Alyson Noël tackles the complicated relationship between two sisters and shows how the bond can endure long after one of them is gone.

My Review: I spent a lot of my time while reading Saving Zoë trying not to cry. I felt sorry for Echo having to go through what she went thorough and with her parents not being completely there for her also must have been really hard.

Echo’s sister Zoë was murdered her parents blamed Zoë’s boyfriend Mark but he had nothing to do with it other than letting Zoë use his car to go and meet her murderer.

What no one but Mark knows is that Zoë kept a journal which he gives to Echo. At first Echo doesn’t know if she should read it but once she starts she can’t stop and Echo realises that no one really knew the real Zoë.

Echo believes that everyone sees her as Zoë's little sister who won’t be happy again. The more she reads Zoë’s journal the closer to her she feels to the point where she ends up kissing Mark her sister’s boyfriend.

While reading the journal Echo finds out that a guy who is now hanging out with one of her friends is a creep and he lead Zoë down a dark path along with Echo’s friend.

The story was completely addictive and it was hard to put it down, I was reading it while I was cooking and while I should have been doing college work.

Review - Horizon by Alyson Noel

HorizonTitle: Horizon
Author: Alyson Noel
Series: Soul Seekers #4
Pages: 356
Release Date: 19th November 2013
Publisher: St. Martin’s Griffin
Source: Supermarket
Format: Paperback

Synopsis: Fate has bound them together--and torn them apart. Now Daire and Dace face one final fight that will seal their destiny forever.

Daire Santos is the last of the Soul Seekers, and the only thing standing between the Richters and the destruction of everyone she loves. With her grandmother gone and Cade back in Enchantment, Daire must finally step into her destiny and lead the fight against the Richters. But what if that means sacrificing the person she loves most?

Bound to the Richters by blood, Dace struggles against the darkness growing inside him that threatens to claim Daire too. Though Daire refuses to give up on him, the choice may not be hers. An epic battle is on the horizon and the end of the world looms near. With such insurmountable odds stacked against them, is their love really enough to conquer all?

My Review: Horizon is the final instalment in the Soul Seeker series and now it’s over I want more which isn’t what I was thinking when I first started to read the series.

The final instalment picks up a few months after Mystic and the tragic death of Daire’s grandmother Paloma at the hands of Cade Ritcher.

All Daire can think about is getting her revenge but Dace can only think of keeping the evil inside of him inside.

During this time all Daire seems to do is train and hone her inherited skills so that she can once and for all destroy Cade and Leandro.

During the six months the Ritchers have started to rebuild the Rabbit Hole night club.

Where Daire is dealing with her loss and her new role as the only seeker, Dace has to deal with the fact that he has evil in him who wants to come out and play but Dace wants to keep it locked inside so he doesn’t hurt the girl he loves. He wants to use this evil to take down his family before Daire gets the chance to.

Throughout the story you get the other character point of views such as Xotichl’s struggle with regaining her sight and her boyfriend Auden’s new found successful music career. We also get a look at Lita’s life living in Paloma’s house with her angel boyfriend Axel now he is no longer an angel.

Although this is the final instalment it ends on a cliff-hanger. Yes they kill all the Ritchers and manage to save Dace but then it just ends, no I won’t accept that, we need to see what happens now the upper, middle and lower worlds are safe from evil.

This final book does give the final showdown between good and evil and of course good wins.

I do believe that there should be another book just to tie up all the things at the end of Horizon. So we can see them all having the happy ever after that Daire saw but we didn’t get to experience.

Synopsis: What happened to Cinderella after she married the Prince? Set in the late 1700s as Napoleon is rising to power, Cinderella embarks on a journey of self-discovery as she tries to come to terms with her failed marriage and her inability to have a child. Torn between the Queen's insistence that she try all means necessary to conceive and her own desires, she agrees to travel to Paris to consult with a witch to help her become pregnant. Her journey leads her to find her long lost Fairy Godmother and aids her to solve the mystery behind her mother's death. Yet the Fey Lord, the Silver Fox, also takes notice in her and her world is suddenly turned upside down...

My Review: Lost is about what happens to Cinderella after she gets her happily ever after although in this story it doesn’t go as a happy after the wedding as Cinderella had hoped.

The story is set 10 years after the wedding, Cinderella isn’t happy with the prince due to his many mistresses. It is written between letters to her fairy godmother and things happening in Cinderella’s life like her wanting to go to Paris but the only way she can go is if she goes to see a woman to help her get pregnant. The queen thinks that if she got pregnant then the marriage would get back on track.

Cinderella tells her fairy godmother about being scared and about the prince being uninterested in her and the queens plans for her while she is in Paris but the fairy godmother tells her to be patient and that she is coming to save her but she ends up falling in love with someone while she’s waiting in Paris.

When Cinderella goes to see the witch she tells Cinderella that she can help her to escape her miserable life and Cinderella agrees to do anything so she can escape.

I loved the twists and turns and I can’t wait to get round to reading book two as I am dying to know what happens to Cinderella next.

My Review: This short story was about a retiring Marine Corp Sargent Cori who doesn’t want to retire but she has to due to a life changing injury.

The Marine Corp guys decide to throw her a leaving party and they force her to wear a dress and go with a blind date which she doesn’t want to do either of these.

Review - The Anti-Prom by Abby McDonald

Publisher: Walker Books

Format: Paperback

Synopsis: Popular girl Bliss Merino is ready to have the perfect prom. But when she catches her boyfriend making out with her best friend in the back of the limo, she has only one thought: revenge...Bad girl Jolene Nelson is the last person anyone expected to see at prom. Yet here she is, dressed in pink ruffles and feeling like a fool for believing that he would actually show up...Meg Rose Zuckerman is ready to stop being a wallflower and start experiencing life first-hand. But when her date stands her up, she finds herself on the outside yet again...Three unlikely allies team up for a night of rebellion, romance, and revenge in this high-stakes dramedy from acclaimed young author Abby McDonald.

My Review: I really enjoyed this book as I felt a connection to the characters when I was there age even though they are all completely different.

It’s the night of prom, a night where a girl is supposed to go to a dance with the boy of her dreams and have a great night, only for our three main characters this doesn’t happen. Bliss finds her boyfriend making out with her best friend, Jolene’s date is a no show and Meg just wants to have fun and dance with the boy she likes.

Bliss is the popular girl who has waited all her life to go to prom but it ends up getting ruined by her newly ex-boyfriend and her ex best friend. Bliss is mainly interested in fashion and gossip but she changes throughout the story.

Jolene is the school bad girl who has issues with her family and getting enough money so she can get away from her home town and go to college.

Meg is a geeky teen who is pretty but not popular. Meg is forced to drive Jolene and Bliss around all night instead of attending prom, but doing so she began to come out of her shell and she wasn’t so shy in the end.

Bliss and Jolene start talking and decide that they need to get revenge and Meg who turns up in the wrong place at the wrong time is forced to drive them around all night. The plans were to put a copy of Bliss’ ex best friend’s diary in her boyfriend’s dorm room so he can find out she’s cheating on him with Bliss’ ex-boyfriend. Jolene wanted to get back at her dad so she breaks into his office and steals a painting which she ends up burning on the golf course by his home.

The book is full of laughter and I felt like I was on the journey with them. There were some surprising twists that even I didn’t see coming. The only thing I didn’t like was the changes in characters point of view but I know it was necessary to keep the story moving forward.

My Review: Cindi is a modern day Cinderella story, but instead of being told that she couldn't go to the ball is isn't allowed to go to a shoe trunk sale. Her step mother is really mean, she receives enough tickets for herself, her daughters and for Cindi but she gives Cindi's ticket to the neighbour who later on gives Cindi the ticket so that she can go to the sale.

Review - Unchanged by Jessica Brody

Unchanged (Unremembered, #3)Title: Unchanged

Pages: 310
Release Date: 24th February 2015
Publisher: Macmillan Children's Books

Format: Paperback

Synopsis: After an experimental mind-altering procedure Seraphina is now a loyal and obedient servant to the powerful company that created her.

But soon - during a nationwide tour to promote Diotech's new line of controversial genetic modifications - her mind starts to rebel and the memories of her past life, and past love, come creeping back in.

As more secrets are revealed and the reality of a Diotech-controlled world grows closer every day, Sera will have to choose where her true loyalties lie.

But it's a choice that may cost her everything she's ever loved.

My Review: While reading Unchanged I kept changing my mind on how many stars I was going to give it at one point in the story it went down to 3 stars all because of the plots

In the final installment Seraphina is back on the compound being controlled somewhat by Diotech and she is getting ready to be introduced to the world but Seraphina isn't sure about the tour.

Serpahina and Kalen are top secret ex-gens, they are super strong and perfect in every way so while on the tour Diotech have put measures in place to stop the public from getting a sneak at them and when one guy gets to close and manages to capture a sneaky picture of them Kalen snaps and beats the guy to a pulp and Seraphina is the only one who can calm him down.

On their first interview a question and answers session with the public Zen manages to send in a question, although Seraphina is now under Diotech's spell she starts to feel torn between what she thinks is right by staying with Diotech or leaving to be with the guy she truly loves Zen.

While traveling to an interview there are a lot of protesters who thing that the ex-gens are wrong and shouldn't be sold, they are trying to stop Diotech. While at one interview Seraphina is kidnapped and taken to a camp where Zen is.

While at the camp Saraphina is drugged to suppress her super human posers and while at the camp someone gives her a cube with information on it and she finds out how she was made and why she managed to survive when previous ex-gens failed to live.

When Seraphina manages to leave the camp she searches threw the compound science facility and finds all the information that she needs to help Zen to create a new Seraphina, one that can have a life free from Diotechs grasp.

The final installment of the Unremembered series was amazing and I am gutted that it is over. There are so many twists and turns which I didn't see coming, I really wish it wasn't over I'm going to miss Seraphina and Zen. If a fourth book or a spin-off ever gets written I hope that it's about the new Seraphina and Zen living happily ever after because after all they have been through they both deserve to be together and happy with no sign of Diotech and Kalen.

Interview - Tara Ellis 2016

The Mystery Of Hollow Inn (Samantha Wolf Mysteries #1)     The Heiress of Covington Ranch (Samantha Wolf Mysteries #4)
My first author interview of 2016 is with Tara Ellis, Tara became a new to me author in 2016 when I read The Mystery of Hollow Inn (Review to Follow) and she kindly agreed to let me interview her.

In your spare time what do you like to read?
Science fiction is my favorite, but I’ll go through my own trends. For years, Stephen King was it, but his work got too dark for me. I still think he’s one of the best writers ever, but I lean towards lighter tales. Medical thrillers or a good mystery are a sure thing!

When you were younger who was your favourite author?
Julie Campbell (author of Trixie Beldon) during my younger years. I discovered Stephen King in 4th grade and I also loved Dean Koontz and Ken Follett.

What inspired you to write the Samantha Wolf series?
I have to mention Trixie Beldon again. My ultimate, all-time favorite series as a child, and it gave me many, many days/nights of healthy escapism. I originally started my series when I was sixteen, and based Sam and Ally on myself and childhood best friend. It has a lot of special meaning to me.

How do you come up with your story ideas?
The Mystery of Hollow Inn was something I thought up in my teens. My grandparents and a lot of family members lived in Montana, so that was my idea of a mountainous getaway. The last three are all very recent. Honestly, I can’t really define how I come up with it. Sometimes I surprise myself how it all coalesces and comes together. I spend weeks, sometimes months on the outlines. I take a lot of walks where I dedicate my thoughts to the story, and I always do my best thinking in the shower! (Although it makes it hard to write it down!)

Can you tell us anything about the next book in the series?
Yes! It’s called, The Haunting of Eagle Creek Middle School. It takes place in late October, and the girls are helping to form a new club at the middle school, for raising money for non-profits. Their first project is a haunted house in the school on Halloween. Of course, it turns out there’s an old haunted story for the school itself, and their first benefactor has some secrets.

In the Samantha Wolf series, who is your favourite character and why?
Samantha Wolf. I relate the most to her, perhaps because back when I was sixteen, I originally based her on myself. The character has most definitely evolved since then, but I still see a lot of the same compulsiveness that I had as a child.

For you what is the easiest and the hardest part of the book to write?
The easiest part is the outline, because there isn’t as much pressure at this point. It’s like I have a ball of clay and I’m just deciding how to mold it, but don’t have it in my hands yet. For me, there is always a bit of hump to get over. The first chapter or two are always a bit slow, because I want to proceed cautiously and not make any major plot errors, or rush it early on. A few chapters in, I always hit a spot, a major point where I have to push through some sort of issue. I have found that if I take my time…perhaps even a step back for a couple of days and think about it, the story always ends up being better for it.

What advice would you give to someone who “ran out of creativity” while writing?
I would say that they’re looking at it in the wrong way. You never run out of creativity. Most likely, you’ve hit a spot where you have an issue with your plot or storyline. I know some authors swear that they don’t need an outline, but I discovered a few years ago that this had been my issue my whole life. I had always struggled to finish a cohesive book prior to this revelation. A good, solid, thoughtful outline will help you. If you already know where you’re going, then you can figure out how to get there. If you hit a wall, step and look at the whole story, not just the point where you are stuck. If you don’t already have an outline, write one. If you do, revisit it and flesh it out. You’ll be amazed at how much better the whole story will be, if you put more time into this aspect of it.

What do you do when you get writers block?
I think I just addressed that above. J  But…to be more specific on how I work on the outline, or take a step back, I often go for a long walk. Or take a long shower, or sit in a hot tub. I put myself in an environment where I’m free to be alone in my thoughts, and I work through the issues mentally. I always envision the scenes in my head as if it were a movie playing out. So I do this….over and over again, with various scenarios until I find one that works.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
I hope that my stories take you to another place for a little while, and offer that same escapism that I enjoy while reading. I try to write relatable characters and plots that in the end, leave you feeling good and a bit nostalgic. I also love feedback, so please feel free to reach out!

Thank you Tara for answering my questions and I cannot wait to read the rest of the series.

I was originally born in Chicago, but I have lived in Washington State for most of my life. I grew up in Eastern WA (Yakima), but have spent my whole adulthood in Western WA.

When and why did you begin writing?
When I was around eight-years-old. I was already an avid reader, and the stories were tumbling around in my head so I had to put it on paper. This also caused me to teach myself how to type!

Did you always want to be an author?
Absolutely. I knew it the first time I put words on paper.

How long each day/week do you dedicate to writing?
At least a couple of hours, sometimes most of the day. I would say an average of four hours.

What do you do when you’re not writing?
Time wise, I work about 100 hours a month at a ‘real’ job as a registration clerk at a nearby Emergency Room. I also work online part-time for another author. I used to be a volunteer firefighter/EMT, but had to quite due to joint issues, but I still teach public CPR for our local EMS.

I have two kids, so of course, spending time with them is a priority! Camping, hiking and swimming are favorite activies.

It began with the forging of a great friendship.

For three months, Lydia Bell has watched Craig, her best friend and the love of her life, be in a happy relationship with someone else. But she’s over it. Or thinks she is until she hears Craig’s voice on the phone. Desperate to put her romantic feelings behind, she joins her roommates for a night out. Maybe she’ll meet someone.

And meet someone she does—a guy named Scott, who looks a lot like Craig. Despite their awkward introduction, flaming arrows fly, and soon Lydia is running off the dance floor to get away from feelings she shouldn’t have. So much for getting over Craig, and so much for Scott.

Until Monday morning, that is. Turns out Scott goes to her school. Worse, they share a class. As if that’s not weird enough, Scott is also trying to get over someone. To help both Lydia and himself, he proposes a fling, and reluctantly, Lydia agrees. Now she just has to hope this fling rules and doesn’t crash into a fiery mountain.
